The Polychrome Frieze in Cueva de El Castillo is one of the most complex and interesting panels of Paleolithic art in the Cantabrian region. The figures were painted at different times throughout the Upper Paleolithic. The oldest motifs are several negative hand images (CA014_1), painted by spraying red pigment, and similar to those a few meters further inside the cave, in the "Gallery of the Hands". Hand images are not too common in the Cantabrian region, but can be seen in such caves as Altamira, Fuente del Salin and La Garma. Superimposed on the hands, a second phase of painting depicts several animals and signs in red. Two small figures of hinds (CA023_1 and CA021_1) and a circular sign (CA024_1) are found in the center of the panel. Equally, in the top right corner of the panel there are a large figure of a horse, a stagÕs head (CA019_1), and the head of a second horse (CA018_1). Beneath this last animal, a hind (CA017_1) and a large bison (CA015_1) are depicted. The third decorative phase is represented by several bison that, from the technical point of view, were all painted in black occasionally combined with red. One of these bison (CA013_1) is in a very similar posture to some of the figures in Altamira. Several of these bison have been dated by carbon-14. The results show that the bison were not all painted at the same time, and the one on the left (CA020_1) with a date of about 13,550 BP is somewhat older the others, dated to about 13,000 BP.
